In 1994, members of the three distinct congregations of Community United Methodist Church mirroring the ethnic make up of the Back of the Yards Neighborhood of Southwest Chicago, engaged in a heroic but failed effort to save their dying church by attempting to merge congregations.
Deborah Boardman worked with two teenagers from each congregation over a four month period. Together they discussed the taped interviews with the congregation elders and how race and economics impacted their lives, while working on their artwork for the Mutual Borders artist book. Mutual Borders was funded by a Regional Artist Projects Grant. Click here to see the Mutual Borders artist book |
